Parade Ambassador

Donald (Don) Head

★ ★ ★

Born in December 1931, Donald (Don) Head has lived a life of quiet service and dedication. His journey from a young soldier serving during the Korean War to a respected member of the veterans' community exemplifies the honor and commitment that define our greatest generation.

Military Service

In November 1952, Don joined the U.S. Army and completed his basic training at Fort Breckenridge, Kentucky. He went on to train as a combat medic at the Etajima Naval Academy in Japan, located just 15 miles from Hiroshima—a powerful reminder of the global conflict that had recently ended.

Don was then attached to the 102nd Reconnaissance Company, stationed just 18 miles from the DMZ in Pyongyang. His unit operated 13 miles over the 38th Parallel, serving in one of the most dangerous and critical areas of the Korean War. For his dedicated service, Don received numerous ribbons and medals before being honorably discharged in August 1954.

Civilian Life & Career

When Don returned home from service, he maintained a low profile and chose not to speak extensively about his time in the military—a characteristic shared by many veterans of his generation. He built a successful civilian career, working for Line O Films, Litton Industries, and Piper Aircraft.

Service to Veterans

In the 1990s, when the Governor of Pennsylvania stopped allowing National Guard units to perform military funerals, the Korean War Veterans of Lycoming County stepped up to fill this vital role for military service members and their families. Members of the organization approached Don and soon joined their ranks.

For approximately 12 years, Don served with the Korean War Veterans of Lycoming County Honor Guard. He frequently presented the flag to families and widows at numerous honor guard services, providing comfort and dignity to those mourning their loved ones. This quiet, compassionate service demonstrated Don's continued commitment to his fellow veterans and their families.
